SharePoint launched in the year 2001. It is a web application platform in the Microsoft Office server suite. SharePoint associate various functions which are usually separate applications such as intranet, extranet, content management, document management, personal cloud, social networking, enterprise search, business intelligence, workflow management, web content management, and an enterprise application store. Also, SharePoint is a very convoluted CMS (Content Management System) with a lot of good business support system features. It has so many choices of it that it's hard to limit what to mention.

Generally, the main reason to prefer SharePoint would be its flexibility of storing diverse types of data. It's not a system to prefer if you are planning one million transactions each second even if the performance can be deeply upgraded with several servers in a business.
